Clark College Theatre presents "reasons to be pretty" which reveals some ugly truths about human relationships.
Clark College presents Neil LaBute's Tony-nominated comic drama "reasons to be pretty" beginning May 3. LaBute’s play, his first to be staged on Broadway, is the final installment of a trilogy that focuses on our modern-day obsession with physical appearance.
The show starts off with some ear-searing verbal fireworks when an off-handed remark that Greg makes to his friend and co-worker Kent about his own girlfriend Steph’s appearance is overheard by Kent’s wife, Carly. The action spins forward in a smartly delivered performance where the cast of characters fight, play and cry their way to a better understanding of life and love.
“Reasons to be pretty” is directed by Pat Rohrbach, whose nearly 30 years of being involved in all aspects of live theater have won her several awards and regional acclaim. Rohrback has been directing at Clark for over 20 years, and has been the theatre’s program coordinator and costume designer for the last 10 years. The cast includes Zac Palica as Greg, Amanda Oberrecht as Steph, Derek Neiman as Kent, and Jessica Wisniewski as Carly.
“It tickles your funny bone but also makes you think about some of the off-handed remarks you may have made that stuck with someone you care about,” Rohrbach said of the play. “We all know every one of these characters; we know somebody who’s like this, and that’s the fun part.”
The production runs May 3-4, 10-11, and 16-18. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. on May 11. Clark College is located at 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. Travel directions including parking maps are available at www.clark.edu/maps.
